The safest basic routine
- Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild dish soap.
- Soak briefly, then use a very soft brush around the setting.
- Rinse over a bowl—not an open drain.
- Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Caring for sapphire
Sapphire is hard, but it can still chip after a sharp impact. Warm soapy water is generally safe. Ultrasonic or steam cleaning may be unsuitable for stones with certain treatments or damaged settings, so confirm treatment history first.
Peridot, carnelian, and moss agate
These stones are softer than sapphire. Avoid harsh chemicals, sudden temperature changes, steam, and ultrasonic cleaners. Remove them before sports, housework, swimming, or applying lotions and perfume.
Store pieces separately
Sapphire can scratch softer gems. Keep each piece in a separate soft pouch or lined compartment. Fasten chains before storing to reduce tangles, and have frequently worn rings inspected periodically for loose prongs.
A simple care schedule
After wearing, wipe jewelry with a clean soft cloth before storing it. Once a month, inspect frequently worn pieces in bright light for loose stones, bent prongs, trapped lotion, or a clasp that no longer closes cleanly. Arrange a professional inspection when something moves, catches fabric, or sounds different—not only on a fixed calendar.
What to remove jewelry for
- Household cleaning, gardening, exercise, swimming, and showering.
- Hair spray, perfume, sunscreen, and lotion application.
- Activities involving impact, pressure, or abrupt temperature change.
Removing a ring does not help if it is placed loosely beside a sink. Use a designated padded dish away from drains, children, and pets.
Care depends on the whole piece
The hardest gemstone does not make the entire item indestructible. Prongs can bend, thin chains can stretch, enamel can chip, and softer accent stones may require gentler treatment than the sapphire center. When metal, glue, pearls, or multiple gems are present, follow the restrictions of the most delicate component.
